About Jyotirvidya Parisanstha
- Jyotirvidya
Parisanstha (known as JVP to people of Pune, India and to
most of the Indian amateur astronomers) is an association of amateur
astronomers.
- On August 22, 1944 some eminent citizens of pune formed JVP,
primarily for the spread of knowledge of astronomy among the public also
to make their own contribution as far as possible. It was the first
association of its kind and remained so far for a few decades. Right
from conception, JVP has been actively working on the propagation of
astronomy in purely scientific temperament.
- JVP has been
arranging sky shows and lectures, which are open to everybody who is
interested in astronomy.
- Library of JVP boasts some very old and rare books as well as books and magazines
giving latest and up to date information on astronomy.
- JVP conducts
courses on Astronomy basic as well as advanced astronomy like
mathematics in astronomy, Astro-photography and telescopes making
workshops for amateurs.
- JVP has a few
good telescopes, which are under active service. During the cloudless
months almost every month, members take these telescopes for star
parties. The star parties are held at places sufficiently away from the
light pollution of the Pune city where the naked eye limiting magnitude
even extends upto 6.5 to 7.
- JVP has serious
observation groups working on: Meteor showers, Occultations and
Photometry etc. The observations are being recognised by International
centres for these observations like IMO and IOTA.
- Few of the members of
JVP are active in the field of astrophotography (the images are now made
available on our site). Few of the photographs are also published in
reputed international journals like Sky & Telescope.
- JVP always tries
to inform the public of any astronomical event that are likely to take
place in the sky. Also JVP tries to keep the public informed
about the major activities and the invensions/ discoveries in the field
of astronomy through all types of media. Some of JVP members do write
regularly in the local newspapers regarding the planetary positions and
astronomical events like occultations, space probes, current events in
astronomy etc.
- Since May 1, 1998
Jyotirvidya is also on internet and will be providing information on
various topics to the people all over the globe with up to date
