Zero Shadow Day

The thing which never leaves us is the shadow. But if it disappeared then? When can it happen? If sun comes exactly overhead then this can happen. Our shadow will be exactly beneath our feet or shadow of some pole may be disappeared.

We say that Sun comes overhead every day at 12 O’clock. But is it really true? NO. Due to tilt of earth’s axis, sun travels 23.5° north and south of the celestial equator. Hence when sun is crossing the celestial equator, then at the place on the equator of earth, sun rises exactly at east point and crosses zenith (point exactly overhead) at 12 O’clock of local time. Then while travelling to north, when sun is at the celestial angle from equator same as that of latitude of our town, on that day, sun is at zenith at 12 O’clock of local time, and the same day is known as Zero Shadow Day for our town. Obviously, this event never happens in the region above tropic of cancer and below tropic of Capricorn.

Latitude of Pune is approximately 18.5° and whiles its travel to north, sun will cross the zenith of Pune on 14th May 2012 and our shadow will be disappeared at local noon i.e. at 12.31 according to Indian Standard Time. Indian standard time is calculated as per the 82.5° longitude hence this difference in the timing of noon occurs.

To observe this zero shadow phenomenon, erect some pole or any cubical thing exactly 90° to the ground or hang a hollow pipe which will show elongated shadow at any other time and exactly circular shadow can be observed at 12.31 pm.

Zero shadow day happens again in the month of July when sun is on its southward journey; but as it is rainy season in India, we may not be able to observe this due to monsoon clouds. So it is the best opportunity to observe this event on 14th May. On this occasion; Jyotirvidya Parisanstha has made available the facility of observing zero shadow as well as Sun spots through telescope at Tilak Smarak Mandir. This program is free and open to all between 12 to 1 pm.
